Starbucks Coffee Misleading Ethical Sourcing and “100% Arabica” Claims – Presence of VOCs – Class Action Canada

Starbucks Coffee Misleading Ethical Sourcing and “100% Arabica” Claims – Presence of VOCs – Class Action Canada

Have you purchased Starbucks coffee? This is a class action lawsuit for misleading representations regarding ethical sourcing and “100% Arabica” coffee.

ACTIS LAW GROUP is lead counsel in a consumer class action against Starbucks, the manufacturer, marketer and seller of Starbucks coffee products, for allegedly misleading consumers about its ethical sourcing practices and the contents of certain coffee products.

Starbucks promotes its coffee as being “100% Arabica coffee” and claims to be “Committed to 100% Ethical Coffee Sourcing” through its Coffee and Farmer Equity (“C.A.F.E.”) Practices program. These claims appear on Starbucks’ product packaging, website, and public-facing reports.

However, investigations by journalists, labour organizations, and human-rights monitors have documented that farms certified under Starbucks’ C.A.F.E. Practices program have allegedly engaged in serious labor abuses and degrading working conditions, including violations of local labour laws, unsafe working conditions, and unacceptable worker housing. Despite these findings, farms involved in such practices reportedly maintained C.A.F.E. certification.
It is alleged that Starbucks failed to disclose the extent of these issues to consumers while continuing to promote its coffee as ethically sourced.

In addition, independent testing of certain Starbucks decaffeinated coffee products allegedly detected the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including methylene chloride, benzene, and toluene. According to the allegations, the presence of these substances may be inconsistent with Starbucks’ representations that its coffee consists of “100% Arabica coffee.”

Consumers who purchased Starbucks coffee products may therefore have paid a premium based on representations regarding ethical sourcing and product composition that may have been misleading.

Who is included?

The proposed class may include all Canadians who purchased Starbucks coffee products during the relevant period.
